WWDC 08 - iPhone Software 2.0 Available July 11

San Francisco - Apple originally promised iPhone and iPod touch software 2.0 would be available at the end of June, but it looks like the world will have to wait until July 11 to get their hands on the update. Steve Jobs revealed that the update would be available the same day that the second generation iPhone 3G hits store shelves during his keynote presentation at the company's World Wide Developer Conference on Monday.

The software update for the iPhone and iPod touch will add document viewing support for iWork files and Microsoft Office files, the ability to bulk move and delete email messages, the ability to search Address Book contacts, and support for a wide range of languages.

Parents will be able to use the new Parental Controls feature to limit how their children use an iPhone, including locking out specific applications.

The update will also add support for the just announced MobileMe service.

MobileMe is a set of Web-based applications for managing personal information, photos and documents online. It also lets subscribers push email, contacts and calendar changes from their computer to their handheld through the Internet.

iPhone and iPod touch software 2.0 will be a free upgrade for iPhone owners, or US$9.99 for iPod touch owners.

There?s a bigger issue here - Apple clearly wants to be able to release this. The ongoing delays - reaching all the way back to the misguided and ludicrous ?Ajax is our SDK? announcement of a year ago - speak to a real internal development problem in getting third-party apps squared away. Jobs is a great magician - he is unparalleled at the sleight-of-hand misdirection to draw our attention away from the fact that there *still* isn?t a legitimate way to get 3rd-party apps onto the iPhone.

I?m sure I?m not the only one that expected a concurrent 2.0 firmware, iPhone app store and iPhone 3G release today. That this didn?t happen speaks volumes about the internal problems Apple is experiencing getting their hardware, 3rd party devs and carriers in line. Obviously this is a big job, but each delay makes it more believable that Apple may have bitten off more than it can chew this time.

I agree - I'm sure you're not the only one who expected more to be announced - but on what grounds? Apple bitten off more than it can chew? what is your evidence?

As for installing 3rd-party apps, Apple has always controlled the widget(tm). The argument, whether you like it or not (and I'm not keen), seems a cogent one to me: Apple doesn't want to be held responsible by the service providers for bringing down the network.

As a developer myself, I'm constantly involved in projects which are delayed, usually by only a small amount, because a product is not ready for the outside world - it's better to ensure quality than compensate for it with a multitude of fixes post hoc. Will there be bugs when 2.0 comes out? of course there will. Will there be fewer than if it were released today? probably. Will it come out when Apple says it will? almost certainly. Apple's delivery dates have, in my experience, always been better than a rather larger competitor.
