Analysts Predict Huge Demand for iPhone 3G

Analysts from RBC, Deutsche Bank and Goldman Sachs have weighed in on Apple's prospects for the iPhone 3G and are predicting huge demand.

Mike Abramsky with RBC Capital said on Monday that he expects "massive" shipments of the new iPhone in the quarter ending in September, about 5.1 million and then 6.5 million more in the December quarter. In 2009, he sees Apple selling 24 million iPhone 3Gs.

Chris Whitmore with Deutsche Bank sees a run rate of 4 to 6 million iPhone per quarter. His forecast is 13 million in 2008 and 23 million in 2009.

Finally, David Bailey with Goldman Sachs wrote in a research note that a visit to Asia found companies in the 3G supply chain more positive on the iPhone and cited "the price cut, broader worldwide distribution and better network connectivity." He also expects some big changes for the iPod nano and classic.

Mr. Bailey reiterated his belief that Apple is working on a Mac/iPod hybrid in a small form factor, the so-called iPod superTouch, that could be announced at Macworld 2009 in January.

The price cut does nothing for those of us that have upgraded our phones and extended our contract in the last 12 months. My handset broke in March, I used my "upgrade" from ATT to purchase a W580i, assuming that the new iPhone would also be unsubsidized. I extended my contract (like I have done the past 8 years) and now it will be Nov '09 before I'm a "qualified" ATT customer. Now if I want that new iPhone, I'll have to pay the price for it, whatever that price may be. It could be an unsubsidized phone, it be paying my Early Termination Fee and losing my number so I can start a new contract. I don't know, but I'm a bit disappointed.

Then your issue is with AT&T, not with Apple or the iPhone. Take it up with them.

Want some cheese with that whine?

If you're impatient, pay the extra cost. If you don't want to pay, wait. It's that simple. Life is often about making choices, usually between options that all have advantages and disadvantages.

Wow - yes, I know my beef is with ATT and not Apple - did I mention any type of ill feelings toward Apple? I was only stating that with all the hoopla surrounding the new iPhone there will be a large amount of existing customers left out in the cold as I will likely be. And yes, I can wait until Nov. '09 - but my employer was going to buy me the phone for my 5 year anniversary with the firm. So it's a little disconcerting from the point of view that at the end of the keynote I was getting a $199 iPhone, but after reviewing AT&T's fine print, I find that as an existing customer I may not qualify for the $199 price. And I'm well aware of choices, pros and cons, advantages and disadvantages. Since when is expressing ones opinion and disappointment relative to the "huge demand" for the iPhone considered irrelevant and whiney? Sheeeesh - lighten up people.
