Rogers Announces iPhone 3G Voice and Data Packages

Rogers Communications in Canada has announced iPhone 3G voice and data packages for its customers. The plans start at CAD$60/month for 150 weekday minutes, unlimited evenings and weekends, 400 MB of data, visual voice mail and 75 text messages.

From there, plans extend to CAD$75/month for 300 minutes, 750 MB of data, and 100 text messages. The highest level plan for $115 includes 800 minutes, 2 GB of data and 300 text messages.

In addition, here are two values packs priced at CAD$15 (and $20) that offer special Rogers services such as Call Display, "WhoCalled," 2,500 (or 10,000) text messages, call forwarding minutes, and other services.

At current exchange rates, the Canadian Dollar (CAD) is worth almost the same as the U.S. dollar (USD).

iPhone users in the U.S. have been paying US$40 for 400 minutes and $20 for unlimited data and 200 text messages. However, those prices were have been based on the slower EDGE network. iPhone 3G users in the U.S. will pay $30 for the data plan, but the usage remains unlimited.

Because Rogers is charging extra for data if users go over their limit, they'll have to monitor that usage carefully if they want to avoid surcharges.

These are totally crazy plans. AND, they don't include the bogus system access fee or mention that they make basic things like caller id 'options' that are on top of these listed prices. And unlimited evenings starts at 9 PM, extra if you want it to start at, say, 6 pm.

Total ripoff.

Yeah, I'm pissed. I'm unlikely to be able to afford an iPhone now.

I'll stick with my Pay as You Go plan until Rogers manages to swing an unlimited Data plan.

I pay an average of maybe $10/month for the minutes I use on my pay-as-you-go plan, so without unlimited Data, I'm paying just way too much for capabilities I could get from an iPod Touch.

Congratulations, Ted Rogers--you now have the distinction of providing the most expensive iPhone service in the world. You're on top!

(And thanks for nothing, CRTC, for looking after the interests of Canadian citizens.)

As much as I would like an iPhone, the fact that Rogers is currently the only GSM provider in Canada is the reason I won't be giving up my Treo 755p anytime soon.

this is crazy! Add up the features even in the most basic plan + the 'package' and after taxes no matter where you live in canada, it costs just shy of $100.00 - right now i'm paying $15 a month on my phone.

like others have stated, as much as it would be great to purchase an iphone - the plans that rogers are providing completly make it unrealistic to afford for most mid-income earners

i'd gladly pay $40-$50 for a monthly service, but the 'features' and packages they are offering are just out of scope for most canadians.

the most basic features we'd come to expect from a phone such as caller id, early ulimited evenings (6pm) etc... are not even on the packages. i was really looking forward to finally getting a chance to purchase an iphone since it's been 3 years since i purchased a cell phone but i'm highly disappointed by rogers and their price structure.
