Canadians Unhappy with Rogers iPhone Pricing

Apple's iPhone may be coming to Canada, but the service plans Rogers will be offering has left some potential customers hopping mad. James Hallen is so mad, in fact, that he started a Web site to tell the world, and penned an open letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs asking for help to convince Rogers to lower its pricing.

In his open letter, Mr. Hallen stated "To our great disappointment, Rogers Communications Inc. has announced VERY unfair rates in comparison to AT&T in the United States and to other authorized wireless service providers around the world. As a result, a consumer movement was born yesterday (June 27th) in protest against these rates."

One point of contention is that Rogers, Apple's iPhone partner in Canada, is imposing data caps on its plans. The least expensive plan with 150 weekday minutes costs CA$60 and includes a 400MB data cap per month. The data plans cover Internet surfing, email when a Wi-Fi network isn't available, along with Visual Voice mail.

The top-tier package will cost Rogers customers $115 a month and includes 800 week day minutes 2GB of data.

Mr. Hallen also started an online petition in an effort to help drive his point home. While online petitions are generally seen as ineffective, he has already collected over 16,000 signatures and is planning on sending a printed copy along with signer's comments to Rogers.

The disappointment in the Rogers iPhone pricing plans, and the similarly high priced plans in some other countries, could lead to a negative backlash against Apple, even though its the carriers that are setting the service plan rates.

"I hope you can do something Steve; we are loyal customers and trust that you will," Mr. Hallen said. "We don't want to lose faith in Apple."

Well, the cap on the cheapest plan here in Norway, is a measly 100 MB and the top is 1 GB. No unlimited plan whatsoever. I donʼt know what Apple is thinking? Is this the way they think they are going to conquer the world with the iPhone? And I cannot transfer files to it? And I cannot use it as a modem for my laptop? Sorry, but as a slick toy it is too expensive. I need something I can use in my work. I guess I will have to skip that one and I am afraid lots of others react the same way, so Apple; wake up! This is not the iPod revisited. You are entering an existing market here.

"Apple" wake up? I think the carriers need to wake up, guest. Sometimes, as in Canada, Apple doesn't have a choice--Rogers is Canada's only GSM-based carrier.

New Zealand has it worse $250 NZD for a 1gb plan on a 24 month contract. Plus $200 for the phone.
