Fortune: iPhone Profits Estimated at $330M in First Weekend

Philip Elmer-DeWitt, in his Fortune blog, collected data from Apple, iSuppli, and Gene Munster's Piper Jaffray survey to arrive at Apple's iPhone 3G profit for the first weekend, possibly in excess of US$330M.

Notable in the blog was the wide ranging collection of data and supported assumptions made to arrive at the final number for Apple's profit on each model of iPhone 3G.

  • 333,333 8GB iPhones @ $274.67 profit each = $91,556,000
  • 666,666 16GB iPhones @ $358.67 each = $239,113,000
  • Total profit to Apple: $330,669,000.

Mr. Elmer-DeWitt also supplied supporting data from other analysts who put the estimated profit per iPhone slightly higher. With those numbers, the total profit number goes up an additional $50M.

On Monday, iPO reported that the iPhone 3G launch may have been the largest consumer electronics launch in history.
