iPhone Dev Team Says PwnageTool 2.0 Coming Soon

The iPhone Dev Team has been working on a tool to unlock and jailbreak the iPhones and iPod touch. It's not quite ready to release, but a blog post on Thursday provided a taste of things to come.

"So we've been working hard on getting the release ready and during this process we've been fixing some final bugs, the actual base of PwnageTool application is working fine and working with all devices that we support....

"We've been restoring our devices to various firmware revisions so that we can try to reproduce the conditions that most users will have. We are able to fully install any applications on any part of the current devices running 2.0 (and b103) and these versions are the iPhone 114, iPhone 2.0, iPhone 3G."

When released, the PwnageTool 2.0 will support:

  • iPhone (1st Gen) with 2.0 - Activated, Unlocked & Jailbroken,(with support for third party applications).
  • iPod Touch with 2.0 - Activated & Jailbroken,(with support for third party applications).
  • iPhone (3G) with 2.0 - Activated, Jailbroken (with support for third party applications).

Unlocking the iPhone 3G has proved to be a challenge, and that will have to wait for a future version. "We've made some progress on the baseband unlock of the 3G device, but at this point PwnageTool will not support 3G unlocking or BootNeuter on the 3G device. It is, of course supported on the first generation device with 2.0. We'll push out an update with 3G support if and when it is completed," the blog concluded.

The release of the PwnageTool 2.0 was described as "soon."

And how is this still not considered criminal? I guess Apple's only recourse will be to stop offering any sort of warranty on the iPhone at all. You mess with it, you break it, tough Shitake mushrooms.

At this point in time why? Anyone who had a worthwhile iPhone app will sell on iTunes.

It has nothing to do with getting things that aren't available or usability...

It's all about a bunch of fanatical linux mondo-zoom dweebies who are insanely obsessed with fighting "the man" in any way they can.

It *IS NOT* about a bunch of fanatical linux mondo-zoom dweebies who are insanely obsessed with fighting "the man" in any way they can.

It *IS* about ... about ... about ... gee, Wally, I guess you're right again.

Yeah... I'm not a Tech guy, but why would one need to jailbreak an iPhone now? I don't get it...

Unlocking to use on another network, that I get to an extent, but Jail breaking?????

I purchased an Iphone 2G a year ago for $400.00. Now I purchased the iphone 3G. Why cannot Apple unlock my old Iphone 2G, so that my family member can use it in another carrier?

I used it to unlock my first gen iPhone as soon as I got my iPhone 3G. Without it, the phone is useless unless it's used on another iPhone account on AT&T. Now - my brother can use it on T-Mobile's network. I see absolutely nothing wrong with that. That said - there's not reason to unlock the iPhone 3G, until the next revision comes out and I upgrade it.

Quite simple - many of us would otherwise be tied to using service providers who charge far, far too much for the phone (~$US1,000!) and connections (~$US60/month minimum). I am continuing to use Vodafone NZ (spit - ptang!) with my old SIM and monthly charge, but I am *not* using the data connection except when I am in range of wifi.

When the 3g becomes available in the same format as the original, I may consider doing the same thing.

Laurie, I think that you may have misread diverreb's post. He/she said that he/she could understand unlocking the iPhone to use on another network, but not "jailbreaking," which is hacking the iPhone so that one can install third-party software. Jailbreaking doesn't have much to do with unlocking the iPhone to use it on a particular network. With the App Store, there's not as much reason to jailbreak an iPhone.

Edited to add URL

Touche. (How come accents don't come through any more?)

In an apochryphal court case in England, the judge is reported as saying, after some technical disussion, "After that most erudite explanation, I have to say that I am none the wiser."

"Ah quite so, M'Lord, but so much better informed."
