iPhone Fails to Break Top Five in CYQ2 Worldwide Sales

For the second calendar quarter, Apple failed to make the top five in worldwide mobile phone shipments, according to IDC on Thursday. The top five in unit shipments for all kinds of phones were Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony.

Overall mobile phone shipments were up over 5 percent from the last quarter and 15 percent from Q2 2007. Total shipments were 306 million.

Smartphones are seeing a growth rate of about 40 percent, according to IDC's report released on Thursday. The top five vendors were:

  • Nokia, 122.0M
  • Samsung, 45.7M
  • Motorola, 28.1M
  • LG Electronics, 27.7M
  • Sony Ericsson, 24.4M

The iPhone, while having a greater percentage of the smartphone market, failed to make a dent in the total worldwide market for Q2. Contributing to that was the fact that Apple was out of stock for the iPhone 2G in mid-May and didn't start shipping the iPhone 3G until calendar Q3.

In the long run, Apple Apple has sought to obtain one percent of the global mobile phone market, annually about 1.2 billion phones. Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster has predicted that Apple will sell 45 million phones in 2009, about four percent of the total market.

"Piper Jaffray's Gene Munster has predicted that Apple will sell 45 million phones in 2009, about four percent of the total market."

In other words, Apple failed to make the top five list BUT will beat their stated goal (one percent) FOUR TIMES OVER??? Why isn't the headline, "Apple on track to surpass iPhone sales goal."??

Nice Title moron. Just to get more hits, you have a ridiculous "statement". If Apple was #2 on the list, you would have "Apple fails to be #1 in mobile phone shipments".

Hell, even the analyst quoted in the content of your article thinks that Apple will exceed their goal by 4 TIMES. QUADRUPLE. Apple was aiming for 1% and may get up to 4%. That's absolutely incredible for a company brand new to a market that has a number of large, well established competitors and "distributors" intent on controlling the products functionality,

And the most amazing thing is that when they said 1% there were doubters everywhere.

Not just the headline, but the story itself is irrelevant for folks who follow Apple. Since the announcement of the 3G iPhone in January, it is hardly surprising that people would tend not to buy the older version. So, since the 3G wasn't released till the 3d quarter, it similarly is rather obvious that sales figures for the iPhone in the 2d quarter would be very low, comparatively. So, my question is, why do we need to hear that? Find some real Apple news worth reporting on, please.

The fact that Apple is not in the top 5 phone venders is not surprising. In fact, I would be surprised if they were in the top 5. The last co on the list sold about 25 million phones. With a run rate like that, Apple would be selling about 100 million iphones a year. The highest estimate is from munster at piper jaffrey at 45 million for next year so don't look for Apple in the top five in this category.

You're comparing companies with whole LINES of telephone products versus a company with a SINGLE phone in their line up... if apple sells 45m phones this year, that'd be a bit more than 11m phones a quarter, not to shabby for a SINGLE product that has been out for a little over ONE YEAR.

kinda wish i could get back the time i spent reading that.
