Monday, August 18th, 2008 at 5:05 PM - by
Apple may be on the verge of signing a deal with OAO VimpelCom, Russia's second largest wireless carrier and with OAO MegaFon, Russia's third largest wireless carrier, according to Blomberg News on Monday.
The carriers could start selling iPhones as early as this week, and Apple wants each carrier to buy over a million iphones, according to sources at the two companies. The news was in the Russian newspaper Vedomosti.
The iPhone is already very popular in Russia, and reports have cited a large number of unlocked iPhone 2Gs already there.
If this report is true, Apple is poised to sell a very large number of iPhones internationally over the rest of the year. Estimates by U.S. analysts have Apple easily meeting its goal of 10M iPhones sold this year, and that's just with sales in the U.S.
