Apple and AT&T Have a Text Message for iPhone Users

Apple and AT&T really want to make sure iPhone customers update to OS X iPhone 2.0.2, so they've sent each customer personal a text message.

There's nothing like exploiting the very technology a company is marketing to stay in contact with its own customers. Accordingly, iPhone customers are getting this message from Apple and AT&T on Friday.

Nothing all that personal about that message; in fact, it sounds very much like a mass-distributed one. When the headline said personal, I was expecting "Dear Mr. Vasić," type of personal (possibly, thinking "personalised", rather than just "personal"...)

I don't know about the iPhone, buy my Touch has had more problems with each successive "update". I do have a lot of apps on my 16GB touch, and suspect that some of them may be responsible, but since updating to 2.0.2, every time I've tried to do a normal sync, my Touch ends up locked with the apple icon screen and the only solution is to connect in recover mode and recover my ipod, setting it up as a new ipod. If I try to recover to the backup, I end up locked up again, too. This has happened four times to me, and the recovery takes several hours. I've already picked up three extra months of me.com. Maybe Apple can give me some extra months at the end of my life to listen to all the music I'm missing out listening to while my ipod is "recovering". I'd go back to version 1 software, but I've spent over $50 for apps, most of which would be well worth it if only I could use them.

Well, personally, I'd like to knwo what's in the update beyond "bug fixes" before I install it. If Apple/AT&T want me to update to their latest and greatest before everyone else has been using it for a month or more, then they really should put a teensy bit of effort into documenting the changes. Otherwise, they can keep their undies on for a little while.

Yeah, too bad the update their hawking does more apparent harm than good. I may still apply it once PwnageTool is updated, but I'm sort of inclined to skip 2.0.2 altogether, personally. Unless, of course, Apple wants to get a little more /honest/ with it's customers and admit what it contains. I'm not in the habit of accepting blind upgrades from any software vendor.

This is unusual. No such announcement was forthcoming about 2.0.1. I wonder if there is some earth-shattering security fix in 2.0.2 that they really don't want leaked.
