Orange Admits to Capping iPhone Speeds in France

Orange, Apple's wireless carrier partner in France for the iPhone, has admitted to capping iPhone download speeds to 384 Kbps, according to ITWire on Tuesday.

This admission explains why some users have been reporting data speeds much lower than the 3G system is capable of. ITWire cited at story at France Info [in French] which explained the situation.

According to France Info, Orange will lift the cap to 1 Mbps on September 15, still lower than the theoretical maximum for most current implementations of 3G.

On Monday, a Wired study appeared to confirm that various carriers around the world are dictating the bandwidth available to iPhone users, however, network limitations alone were discussed based on user experience. The France Info report on Tuesday is the first mention of an intentional speed throttling by a wireless carrier for the iPhone.
