Dell: Ready to Take On iPhone, Someday

Dell CEO Michael Dell says his company is can compete with Apple's iPhone, but that there aren't any plans to jump into the fray any time soon. He did, however, hint that his PC making company is working on small form-factor devices, according to Reuters.

Mr. Dell made his remarks at the Citi Technology Conference in New York. When asked about competing with the iPhone, he commented "You'll see us with smaller and smaller devices that have capabilities of the devices you are referring to. Not in the near-term."

Dell has tried its hand at small form factor devices before with little luck. Taking on Apple's combination iPod and smartphone could be an act in futility for the company -- unless it can figure out how to design an iPhone better than Apple does.

That remembers me time ago when a friend and I wrote a program for rescue damaged disks (a la "Norton") for the UCSD Pascal Apple ][. One guy went to my friend and said: "Hey, Can I borrow your system?. It is very easy to do, but I have no time right now".

Go figure.

Some people like vaporware a lot.
