Apple Unveils Redesigned iPod nano with Accelerometer
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 at 1:25 PM - by
SAN FRANCISCO - Apple CEO Steve Jobs confirmed rumors that the iPod nano was getting a redesign during his "Let's Rock" presentation on Tuesday. The fourth generation iPod nano returns to the long form factor that the first and second generation models used, and includes a built-in accelerometer like the iPhone and iPod touch.

The new iPod nano is the thinnest iPod to date, according to Mr. Jobs, and it includes a "Genius" feature like iTunes 8 that selects similar songs based on the currently selected track.
Rotating the new nano into a horizontal position switches to a Cover Flow view, and shaking the nano automatically shuffles the songs in your playlist. It will offer 24 hours of battery life for music, and four hours for video playback.
According to Mr. Jobs, Apple wants to be environmentally responsible in its iPod line, so it is now using Arsenic-free glass, along with BFR-free, Mercury-free, PVC-free, and "highly recyclable" components. They are the "cleanest, most toxic-free iPods we've ever built," he said.
The new nanos will be available in eight colors and 8GB or 16GB capacities. The 8GB model will be priced at US$149 and the 16GB model will cost $199. Both should be available in the next few days.
