Apple Revamps Sleeker iPod touch, Adds Speaker [Updated]

SAN FRANCISCO - At Apple's "Let's Rock" even on Tuesday, Apple unveiled a new, sleeker iPod touch 2G with a more contoured back and included a built-in speaker and volume control buttons.

The new iPod touch has the same 3.5 inch (89 mm) screen with a glass display, but it is even thinner and sports a tapered, stainless steel back. Integrated volume controls are now included.

"iPod touch is the funnest iPod we've ever created," Mr. Jobs said. "Users can listen to millions of songs, watch thousands of Hollywood movies and now, thanks to the App Store, download and play hundreds of great games on their iPod touch."

Mr. Jobs also told the audience that the new touch also adds a miniature speaker, something that's really hard to do in a device this thin. The speaker is just for "casual listeners," not for audiophiles, Mr. Jobs reminded the audience.

No changes to the Wi-Fi system, 802.11 b/g, were announced. The new touch works with the new iTunes 8 Genius feature, which allows customers to automatically create playlists while on the go. It also features built-in Nike + iPod system. Users can simply place the optional Nike + iPod sensor (priced at US$19) in their Nike + shoe to seamlessly connect with the new iPod touch 2G to track miles run or sync with the latest generation gym equipment.

The iPod touch 2G, 8 GB is priced at US$229, a 16 GB model at $299, and a 32 GB model for $399. Those prices represent price decreases across the line in terms of capacity. The 32 GB capacity represents 7,000 songs, 25,000 photos or 40 hours of video.

The iPod touch has always had an accelerometer. This isn't new.

I think you mean, Adds Speaker and Volume Controls. The iPod touch has always had accelerometers. Or perhaps you meant the iPod nano, which did get an accelerometer today

Yeah, this info is a bit mixed up. The new iPod Nano has an accelerometer built into it so it can switch between portrait and landscape (or list and cover-flow) views. The new iPod Touch has a new case that looks exactly the same as the new iPhone but with a chrome back. Also it finally has an external volume switch and speaker like the iPhone 3G too.
