Apple Releases iPod touch 2.1 Update
Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 at 5:20 PM - by
Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced on Tuesday that iPhone and iPod touch Software Update 2.1 would be released on September 12, but iPod touch users are getting access to the update first since Apple released their version on Tuesday afternoon. Along with the performance and bug fixes Mr. Jobs mentioned during his "Let's Rock" special media presentation, the update also includes several security-related patches as well.
iPod touch 2.1 corrects problems where sandbox application restrictions were not properly enforced, maliciously crafted font data could lead to arbitrary code execution, forged DNS information could be provided to mDNSResponder, TCP connections could be spoofed, and a WebKit flaw could lead to to arbitrary code execution when visiting maliciously crafted Web sites.
iPod touch 2.1 is free and available after connecting your handheld to your computer and launching iTunes. It is free for users that have already upgraded to iPod touch software version 2.0, or purchased an iPod touch with the version 2 software pre-installed. For users that have not already upgraded, the update costs US$9.95.
iPhone users will have to wait, presumably until Friday, before they can install the 2.1 update.
