Windows Trojan Horse Aimed at iPhone Users
Thursday, September 18th, 2008 at 12:20 PM - by
A new spam e-mail aimed at Windows users who have an iPhone has surfaced. The spam, which purports to contain the most popular iPhone game in a attachment, actually contains a Trojan Horse Troj/Agent-HNY.
The attached file, Penguin Panic.zip isn't even executable on a Mac or an iPhone. Windows users who launch the attachment, however, will become infected.
Instead of a game launching, the screen just says "Shoes," according to iTWire on Thursday. Deleting the game will also result in other files on the system being deleted, which will cause some legitimate applications to fail.
No variations of the attachment have been spotted that are executable on Macs.
A security expert, Graham Cluley, said in his blog that the spam exploits the huge popularity of games on the iPhone as well as the e-mails invitation to set a new high record. "...there is a real buzz about games on the new Apple iPhone, especially because of the new App Store and the device's use of an accelerometer to introduce some Nintendo-like innovative gameplay."
The spam depends on the age-old ruse of trying to get the reader to double click on an attachment with a spam e-mail. Most PC (and Mac) users know not to do that, but with the popularity of iPhone games, the malware authors may suspect that they'll still catch some users who click before they think.
