Apple TV Update Version 2.2 Posted

Late on Thursday, Apple posted a new version of the Apple TV software, version 2.2. The new version includes security fixes, CVE-ID: CVE-2007-4674, CVE-2008-3626 and CVE-2008-3629 that all relate to maliciously crafted movies or PICT files.

The update is available for Apple TV 1.0 and 2.1. Apple said in its security forum post that the Apple TV will automatically check for the update on a weekly schedule, and that process could take up to a week depending on when the Apple TV checks for updates.

Customers can elect to force an immediate update by navigating to Settings -> General -> About -> Update Software. The download takes only several minute on a broadband connection.

Additional details of the Update can be found on Apple's security updates page.

Apple's security update notices typically cite only the changes related to vulnerability fixes and not new features or general bug fixes.

Now supports subtitles! Upgraded to 2.2. Crossed my fingers for subtitle support - it's there!!! Let's you choose the default language. I am glad I've been saving my movies with soft subtitles hoping this day would come. Now I have subtitles on my iPhone, iPod Touch, Macs, and AppleTV.

They've also added a Standby menu item to the Settings section. Previously, you had to hold the center button on the remote down for about 6 seconds to activate standby ("sleep") mode.
