Thursday, November 6th, 2008 at 11:20 AM - by
AT&T announced on Thursday that it is expanding its Wi-Fi coverage area by purchasing Wayport, Inc. The US$275 million deal will give AT&T an additional 20,000 hotspots in the U.S., and 80,000 world wide.
Some of the locations where Wayport offers Wi-Fi Internet access include the Four Seasons, Marriott Vacation Club, and Wyndam hotel chains, along with McDonald's restaurants.
The purchase is good news for AT&T customers, including iPhone owners, because adds even more locations where subscribers can get free Wi-Fi access. The cell service provider announced at the end of October that it is offering free Wi-Fi hotspot access to its iPhone customers.
AT&T and Wayport plan to wrap up their deal before the end of 2008.
