1GB iPod nano Continues Apple’s Influence on Flash Market
Wednesday, February 8th, 2006 at 2:00 PM - by Brad Cook
Apple's release of a 1GB iPod nano, as well as its price cuts for the 512MB and 1GB iPod shuffles, have hit the stock prices of some flash memory manufacturers on fears that flash prices will continue to decline and eat into their profits. Macworld UK noted that flash memory spot prices have dropped 20% in 2006, prompting an analyst to state: "Looking back, people had been too optimistic about NAND [flash] late last year."
However, the Mac news site also pointed out that Foxconn Electronics is one of several Apple partners benefiting from the iPod's success. It earns NT$10 billion monthly from manufacturing iPod nanos, Macworld UK said, citing a DigiTimes report.
Macworld UK also printed an IDG News story that says Toshiba and SanDisk are pouring money into a flash memory production facility in Japan. When the plant opened last year, it had a maximum capacity of 48,750 wafers produced monthly, with each wafer capable of handling thousands of flash chips, but that number will be increased to 70,000, thanks to the new investment.
