AT&T Addresses iPhone Activation Problems
Sunday, July 1st, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
While most iPhone buyers are able to activate their new combination iPod and smartphone without any issues, those that have had problems are looking at AT&T with a critical eye. AT&T has been working to correct the problems, and by Sunday afternoon had made some improvements, according to Forbes.
Instead of activating the phone in the store and at the time of purchase, iPhone owners are required to connect the phone to their computer and use iTunes to manage the activation process. Most customers are able to complete the process in under ten minutes, according to AT&T spokesman Michael Coe.
"We are working on any issues on an individual basis with customers who were impacted" by activation delays, he said.
Some of those problems were caused by overloaded AT&T servers as thousands of new iPhone owners tried to complete the activation process at the same time. The technical changes AT&T made to the activation process should, however, help prevent continued activation delays.
Many Apple retail stores had lines over 300 people long at 6PM Friday night when the iPhone went on sale. In many cases, Apple employees were able to sell enough iPhones to clear the lines in a matter of hours, and many of those customers were trying to activate their new phone within minutes of making their purchase.
Stress on the AT&T servers should also start to taper off some now that the iPhone launch weekend has passed. But how well AT&T manages its new iPhone customers may have an impact -- either positive or negative -- on future iPhone sales.
