AT&T EDGE Network Conks Out
Monday, July 2nd, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
AT&T customers hoping to show off the wireless data features on their new iPhones were out of luck on Monday. The companys EDGE and 3G data services went down leaving iPhone and most other AT&T cell phone users temporarily in the lurch, according to Macworld.
While iPhone owners were left demonstrating EDGE features to their friends with phrases like "Well, if it worked, this is what would have happened," AT&T was busy working to get the data service back on line. The data service loss affected primarily the midwest and western regions of the United States, and AT&T managed to restore EDGE and 3G by about 7PM eastern time.
EDGE is the data transfer service that Apples iPhone and several other cell phone models use to connect to the Internet for email and Web browsing. While the service loss meant that most AT&T customers had to do without, iPhone users could still get online by using WiFi Internet hotspots.
AT&T spokesman Warner May commented that he didnt know exactly when the EDGE and 3G failure started, and added "The iPhone was not the cause."
