AT&T Launches Routine SMS ads to iPhone Customers
Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
iPhone customers have grown accustomed to Short Message Service (SMS) text messages from Apple and AT&T alerting them to a new version of the OS. AT&T started extending that free service on Wednesday to inform customers about existing services that may interest them.
On Wednesday, iPhone customers received this message from AT&T:

iPO asked AT&Ts Mark Siegel about the message because, despite the wording, it seems to refer to an already existing service, AT&T World Connect.
"This is routine. We are simply letting iPhone 3G customers know that their phones are provisioned to make calls from the U.S. to other countries and in so doing we also let them know there are plans that can save them money," Mark Siegel, Executive Director of AT&T Media and Industry Analyst Relations told iPO in an e-mail.
Accordingly, iPhone customers can probably expect to receive a lot more (free) text messages from AT&T advising them of current and new services. Mr. Siegel added that there is no mechanism to opt out of these informational messages.
