AT&T Plans to Bring U-verse to iPhone
Monday, September 15th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
AT&T has plans to bring its Internet and video service, U-verse, to Apples iPhone. The service will add AT&Ts wireless multimedia services to Apples combination iPod and smartphone, and will also let owners use their iPhone as a remote control to flip through TV channels, according to Reuters.
The service would potentially give AT&T more control over the content users watch on their iPhone. Apple hasnt chimed to offer its take on AT&Ts plan, but the move would potentially add applications to the iPhone that compete with the offerings Apple bundles with the device.
Apple recently came under fire from developers over frustration with the iTunes-based App Store application screening process. In one instance, a developer was told that his application was not going to be approved for distribution through the App Store because it "duplicated functionality" found in iTunes.
Even though Apple has told at least one developer that it wont allow applications with overlapping features, other applications -- like weather apps and calculators -- have been allowed on the App Store.
Apple hasnt said how it feels about U-verse coming to the iPhone, but considering how tightly the company likes to control the user experience, the news likely isnt sitting well in Cupertino.
