Acoustic Research debuts two new speaker systems

LAS VEGAS - Acoustic Research is demonstrating two new speaker systems at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, marking the company's first offerings geared specifically for the iPod. Both the blackVault and blackTower are 2.1 stereo speakers that feature a universal iPod dock adapter, remote control, and high gloss black finish.

The blackVault distinguishes itself with its vacuum tube amplifier and wooden subwoofer and speaker cabinets. The vacuum tube design is similar to Gini's iTube ($349, 4 stars), but with a slightly smaller form factor and lower price tag, at $199 when it ships later this quarter. The blackVault also sports a well designed iPod dock and additional controls on top of the subwoofer, so a seperate dock is not needed like with the iTube.

The blackTower features a digital amplifier and larger subwoofer than the blackTower, creating punchier bass but missing out on the extra warmth that only a vacuum tube can create. The blackTower also features a series of LEDs on the front of the subwoofer tower that functions as a single channel audio meter—not terribly useful, but a cool design touch. the blackTower will also ship later this quarter, pricing is expected to come in around $150.

More information in the blackVault can be found at Acoustic Research's site; the company has yet to launch a product page for the blackTower.
