    • Goldfrapp
    • On their latest CD, Supernature, Goldfrapp has put together a successful mix of 1980-era New Romanticism, German cabaret, and T. Rex glam that leaves you riveted even through the album's lulls. It's a great amalgam that sounds current without sounding at all dated.

Amazon Teams with TiVo for Movie Downloads

Amazon is trying a new approach for its Unbox video download service by teaming with TiVo. The new service, called Unbox on TiVo, is launching with a limited number of TiVo users on Wednesday, and will roll out to all TiVo customers later this year if the test phase goes well, according to Forbes.

If the service proves successful, it could present some competition for the Apple TV since TiVo users won't be required to purchase any additional hardware or software. The Apple TV appliance from Apple will offer similar features by allowing users to stream movies from their Mac or PC to their television, but it is still an additional box in the home theater mix.

Initially, videos from CBS, Fox, Lionsgate, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Warner Bros. will be available. TV episodes will be priced at US$1.99 each, and most movies will cost between $9.99 and $14.99. Movie rental downloads will start at $1.99.

Orders must be placed through Amazon's Unbox video service, meaning users are required to use a computer and Web browser instead of their TiVo. Once the videos are downloaded to the TiVo, they can be viewed on a TV, or copied to a computer and portable player. Information about Mac and iPod compatibility is not yet available.

Even if the Unbox on TiVo service is Windows-only, it still poses a potential threat to Apple TV since it does not require purchasing any additional hardware. It does not, however, offer the easy-to-use interface found at the iTunes Store.
