Analyst: iPhone 3G Hits 3M Mark
Sunday, August 10th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
The iPhone 3G has been available for only a month and may well have already sold 3 million units, according to Cote Collaborative analyst Michael Cote.
CNNMoney reports that Mr. Cote is a former T-Mobile executive and has a record for accurate predictions in the wireless market.
Demand for the iPhone 3G, according to Mr. Cote, is strong and there arent any signs that interest is letting up. "They are seeing unprecedented demand," he said.
Apple sold a million units only three days after the combination iPod and smartphone when on sale on July 11 in 22 countries, and lines for the device were still around three weeks after the launch event. The iPhone 3G is scheduled to go on sale in an additional 21 countries on August 22, and should be available in about 70 countries before the end of the year.
Apple plans on selling 10 million units by the end of 2008 and seems well on its way towards hitting that goal, assuming it can keep production in pace with demand. The company had inventory issues early on, but top-level executives are confident that production is ramping up to meet world-wide demand. If so, Apple could hit its 10 million unit milestone ahead of its end of year deadline.
