Apple Announces iTunes 8 [Updated]

Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced iTunes 8, the newest version of the company’s media management and playback application, during a special media event at the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco on Tuesday. Version 8 sports a new streamlined library view for displaying album covers along with a "Genius" feature with the ability to automatically generate playlists based on the currently selected song.

The visual browsing interface lets users display their music and videos as album covers and to play content by clicking on the album art.

Along with the ability to generate playlists of similar songs, the Genius playlist feature also lets those playlists update based on the music in your library. According to Apple, information about your iTunes library is transmitted to Apple when you use the Genius feature, but the company stated that the data is sent anonymously and aggregated with data from other iTunes users.

The update also included a couple of under-the-hood security-related fixes. A misleading dialog warning Mac OS X 10.4.11 and Mac OS X Server 10.4.11 users would see when allowing music sharing through the built-in firewall has been corrected to warn about potential security risks, and a flaw that could allow local users on Windows XP and Vista to gain system privileges has also been fixed.

iTunes 8 is available as a free download for Mac OS X and Windows users at Apple’s iTunes Web site.
