Apple CFO OK with Unlocked iPhones

Even though Apple doesn’t generate any recurring revenue from iPhones unlocked for use on non-approved cell networks, CFO Peter Oppenheimer claims that’s not a big problem. In fact, he feels the unlocked handhelds aren’t necessarily bad for the company, and are a sign of "unprecedented demand," according to cellular-news.
"We view it as a positive indicator of future demand," Oppenheimer said at a Morgan Stanley technology conference on Wednesday.
Some analysts have been concerned that a high number of unlocked iPhones would have a negative impact on Apple since the company earns revenue from units that are activated through exclusive partners like AT&T in the United States, or O2 in the United Kingdom.
Based on Mr. Oppenheimer’s comments, however, Apple isn’t as worried about the potential revenue loss as analysts are.
Mr. Oppenheimer also reaffirmed that Apple plans to sell 10 million iPhones before the end of 2008, and that the handheld will launch in Asia before the end of the year.
