Apple Clarifies iTunes MiniStore: Not Spyware

Apple has changed how the new MiniStore in iTunes works by turning it off by default, and adding a dialog that explains exactly what the MiniStore does. After the release of iTunes 6.0.2 at Macworld Expo last week, many users voiced concern over the possibility that Apple was collecting information without their consent. Although Apple denied that claim, it did not make it clear what type of information was being collected, or how to disable the MiniStore.
The MiniStore now gives an explanation of what it does before you activate it:

The iTunes MiniStore allows you to discover new music and videos right from your iTunes Library. As you select items in your Library, information about that item is sent to Apple and the MiniStore will show you related songs or videos. Apple does not keep any information related to the contents of your music Library.
Previously, the MiniStore was active by default, and there was no explanation about the types of data it might be collecting. A support article on Apple's Web site did, however, explain how to deactivate the MiniStore feature.
If you have enabled the MiniStore, it's easy to deactivate: Just click the button at the bottom of the iTunes window to close it. Clicking the button again reactivates the MiniStore.
