Apple Files For ‘Mobile Me’ Trademark

On Jan. 5, Apple filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for the term "Mobile Me" in the context of several areas, including mobile devices and services, satellite, cellular and TV networks, and computing devices. According to a Reuters story, the news has increased speculation that Apple could unveil an iPod that incorporates a cell phone.

The article noted that Apple may also become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) and resell cell phone service on a carrier's network.

AppleInsider has posted text from Apple's trademark filing. In addition, the Web site this past weekend revealed that Apple has filed for trademarks on "iPod Hi-Fi" and "iPod Boombox" with Hong Kong's Intellectual Property Department, although not with the U.S. equivalent. The former apparently refers to an iPod that offers higher fidelity than the ones now available, although AppleInsider noted that it would have been an alternative name for the fifth-generation iPod.

Regarding the latter, the Web site revealed that sources have said Apple wanted to introduce its first "iPod companion" products at last week's Macworld Expo, but CEO Steve Jobs dropped them from his keynote address for unknown reasons.
