Apple Foots Travel Bill for iPod Promoting Lawmakers

Michigan lawmakers proposing a US$36 million deal to buy an iPod for every student in the state traveled to California earlier this year to discuss education initiatives, and at least part of their bill was covered by Apple. The Detroit Free Press reports that Representative Matt Gillard (D-Alpena), one of the legislators that took the trip, revealed the information.

At least two Michigan politicians took a two-day trip to California earlier this year that included a meeting with Apple representatives to discuss classroom technology. Last week, House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Township), who also made the trip, unveiled the proposal to purchase iPods for state school children as learning tools.

Both lawmakers agreed that Apple paid for at least part of the trip, but neither would say who else came along. Rep. Dillon commented that he was "one of several lawmakers to take this trip."

"I am more convinced than ever that the future for our children lies in education," he added. "As we move to the technology age and the knowledge-based economy, it would be irresponsible to separate technology from our K-12 system."

The iPod proposal has fallen on critical ears since Michigan is currently working through a depressed economy and a $600 million budget shortfall. Many see the iPod as simply an entertainment item, and not an educational tool, and feel that Michigan lawmakers are out of touch with the state's financial situation.

But Rep. Gillard feels critics are focusing too much on the iPod. "This is about technology in the classroom. I don't know that it has to be iPod-specific technology."

Other lawmakers may start looking into the matter. Matt Resch, spokesman for the Republican leader in the House, noted that trips like this are common, but that they have never been followed by a proposal to purchase $36 million worth of Apple products.
