Apple Gets First Crack at Flash Memory
Monday, July 9th, 2007 at 4:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Apple Inc. has been increasing its NAND flash RAM orders, and in response Hynix Semiconductors and Samsung Electronics have been reserving more of their stock for the iPod and iPhone maker. The end result is that other electronics manufacturers are now having problems getting enough RAM for their products, according to DigiTimes.
Apparently both memory manufacturers sent notices to their customers that chip availability will be limited from July on since Apple is pre-stocking memory in anticipation of its usual seasonal increase in product demand. First-tier customers will likely still be able to get NAND flash RAM, but probably not in the quantities they want. Second-tier customers, however, may find that they cant get any RAM at all.
Apples popular iPod shuffle, iPod nano, and iPhone all rely on NAND flash RAM, so hoarding the memory chips these devices use will help the company better meet demand during the busy holiday shopping season. On the other side of the coin, Apples move could hamper its competition in the portable digital media player market.
