Apple Stocking Up on Flash RAM

Apple Computer has been busy closing deals on substantial quantities of NAND Flash RAM, leading to analyst speculation that Apple may be working on an 8GB version of the iPod nano. According to DigiTimes, Apple has already signed a deal with Samsung for large quantities of 2Gbit NAND chips, and Hynix Semiconductor is filling more chip orders, too.
The iPod nano is currently available in three capacities: 1GB, 2GB and 4GB. From there, the next jump is to the hard drive-based 30GB video capable iPod. Many have been waiting for a higher capacity Flash-based iPod nano to fit in the gap between the current nano line up and the hard drive-based models.
Apple's demand for NAND chips is translating into good news for suppliers. For the past few months, the price for memory chips has been somewhat weak, but Apple's need for chips is helping to push the market in a more healthy direction.
