Apple TV Processor, Video System Analyzed

In order to figure out the details of the Apple TV CPU and GPU systems, Anandtech took one apart and used some basic computer knowledge to analyze the components.

A major target for examination was the graphics system where a GeForce Go 7300 was identified. "On the bottom of the motherboard you’ll see the two 32MB Samsung 700MHz GDDR3 devices for a total of 64MB of dedicated graphics memory. The Go 7300 does support Turbo Cache so it can get speedy access to main memory, but given that the Apple TV will be required to deal with fancy graphics and transitions at resolutions as great as 720p or 1080i it makes sense to have a good amount of local memory," the author reported.

The next target was the CPU. The markings on the chip didn’t make it obvious what kind of CPU it was, however, based on the Northbridge chip, Anandtech said, "We believe that the Intel CPU in the Apple TV is an Ultra Low Voltage Pentium M based on the Dothan core, running at 1GHz (max frequency), 400MHz FSB and a 2MB L2 cache."

After taking the Apple TV apart and photographing every component, the next trick according to the author is to figure out how to put it back together and get it working for further tests. That might be an even bigger challenge.
