Apple to Allow Credit For Songs Purchased?

Apple's iTunes Store may soon give customers credit for tracks they've already purchased from a particular album, if they decide they'd like to buy the entire album after downloading a few of its songs. iTunes sells singles for $0.99 each and most albums for $9.99 (some older ones are cheaper, while double albums are more expensive), but if a $9.99 album contains, for example, 12 songs and a customer buys two tracks from it, they must spend another $9.90 to complete it. The value proposition gets even worse for older albums, some of which are as cheap as $5.99.
CNET's Ina Fried has cited a source who said that "Apple Computer and the record labels are onto this [type of situation]," since neither party wants to miss out on potential revenue from such customers. Apple had no comment, but Gartner analyst Mike McGuire said: "In the interest of more consumer-friendly transactions, that makes some sense. In the end that's dependent on whether I see value in those other eight songs."
