Audible Launches UK Web Site

Audible on Wednesday opened the doors to the UK version of its online store full of spoken audio files. Customers can purchase content on an a la carte basis or choose one of two subscription options: for GBP 14.99 per month, they can choose two audio books; for GBP 9.49 per month, they can choose one audio book and one periodical. Files can be downloaded to iTunes or another media management application and loaded on an iPod or other compatible device, including palmOne handhelds. Subscribers who purchase a 12-month membership get a free 512MB iPod shuffle.
Audible enjoyed robust success the past few years, seeing its fortunes rise with the iPod's ever-increasing popularity, but it was recently beset by a few woes: In May, S&P Equity Research rated their stock "Sell," citing "a growing threat" from podcasting, and last week, National Public Radio stopped distributing its daily and weekly programs through the Web site.
