Australia’s Telstra Not Excited About iPhone
Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 at 2:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Australia's mobile phone service Telstra isn't showing the same level of excitement as Cingular over Apple's iPhone. The Age reports that Telstra's operations chief, Greg Winn, sees "significant operational challenges" in store for the iPhone after it debuts.
Mr. Winn commented "There's an old saying - stick to your knitting - and Apple is not a mobile phone manufacturer, that's not their knitting." The comment refers to an Australian saying that implies a company should stick with what it already knows instead of branching out into new and unfamiliar markets.
That translates to bad news for Apple since Telstra is the only carrier in Australia that supports the EDGE, or 2.5G, data transfer protocol that the iPhone uses for Web surfing. Unless Apple can convince Telstra that the iPhone is a product worth carrying, the company may have problems releasing a fully functional version of the mobile phone in Australia.
Apple could hold off bringing the iPhone to Australia until a 3G version is available, or it could strike a deal with a different carrier to offer a limited functionality version of the phone. A hobbled version of the iPhone, at its US$499 and $599 price points, however, may be a hard sell down under.
