BT Taking on Apple iTunes With Mobile Radio Service

U.K. phone company British Telecom (BT) is preparing to launch a service to take on Apple Computer for a share of the multi-billion dollar music download market.
According to The Observer on Sunday, BT is launching BT Livetime on Monday -- a service that will enable mobile phone users to listen to 50 radio stations over their handsets and download tracks.
The service will be a joint venture between BT and UBC Media and will be launched as a pilot with Virgin Mobile. The first channels to be accessible through this service will be Sky Sports News, Sky News and Blaze, a music programme created especially for mobile television, as well as 50 digital radio stations.
The test will take place for a four-month period, and the programs will be transmitted using the DAP digital radio network. This solution has been preferred above all others, because it�s a safe and proven one and, by comparison with NTL, it does not require new transmitters and additional 3G spectrum for its broadcasts.
