Blu-ray Title Pricing Vexes Studios, Retailers

Now that Blu-ray has triumphed over HD DVD, the issue of movie title pricing is vexing both the studios and retailers. Retailers, who make very little money on DVDs don’t want to see Blu-ray movie prices plummet. Despite that, customers are pushing back on the studios that price Blu-ray movies in the $40+ stratosphere.

Another problem is that Blu-ray prices are hard to predict and are all over the charts. Sony Pictures priced Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story at US$43.95 while Total Recall and Terminator 2 are now at $19.99, older movies to be sure.

Many stores are ramping up their Blu-ray selections. With the HD DVD sections gone in most outlets and the push by the Blu-ray Disc Association, Sony and other manufacturers and retailers, customers are discovering Blu-ray movies and their often high prices. This week, Toshiba reported that its profits fell 95 percent as a result of the failed HD DVD business, and the Blu-ray camp also spent a considerable amount of money winning that war. As a result, the prices of the least expensive Blu-ray players are still generally in the $400 range to recover some of those costs.

One studio executive, according to VideoBusiness on Friday said that Blu-ray title prices are aggressive (meaning high) to motivate purchasing and lead customers to believe they are getting something valuable.

Given the state of the current economy, that strategy just might not work with consumers and could further open the door to Internet rental technologies whose quality might be "good enough" for many right now.
