Blu-ray and HD DVD Camps Cite Sales Successes
Monday, November 26th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Both the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps have been touting recent sales successes, according to TVPredictions on Tuesday. Drastic holiday price drops for the HD DVD players have accelerated sales, but Blu-ray is also having success with the Sony PS3 player and Blu-ray title sales in the U.S. and Europe.
The HD DVD promotional group said that recent price drops at Wal-Mart and Best Buy resulted in 100,000 HD DVD players sold in one week. The total number of players now sold amounts to about 750,000. That includes players bought as accessories to the Xbox 360.
However, Blu-ray players in Sonys PS3 swamp that number, and the sales of movies in the Blu-ray format are outselling HD DVD titles by about 2:1in both the U.S. and Europe.
Each side is putting its spin on the sales situation, but neither side is really gaining any traction. With the drop in prices recently, a few customers may opt for buying both players -- or the new Samsung player that plays both formats. While that player is more expensive than even individual Blu-ray and HD DVD players combined, it would save room in tight spaces.
