Bring On the Hacks: Activating iPhone Without a Contract

Following the news that DVD Jon found a way to activate an iPhone without signing a contract with AT&T, the hacks that take advantage of that knowledge have begun to appear. Only a week after the release of the iPhone, hack applications for both Mac OS X and Windows are already available.
The hacks don’t enable any of the phone-related features including EDGE data access, Visual Voicemail, or the ability to make or receive phone calls. Other iPhone features, however, will function including Wi-Fi, and the ability to play music and videos.
Tools like these that activate the iPhone without first signing a two-year service contract with AT&T are not approved, and at some point Apple could release software updates that re-lock the combination iPod and smartphone. Until then, the hacks offer the brave souls willing to try them a way to use some of the devices features in locations where AT&T does not offer coverage.
