CBS, AOL Give up on Internet HD

High-Definition TV is on a roll this fall, but not for CBS and its Internet portal so they’re giving up according to the New York Times on Friday. AOL has made the same decision for Hi-Q.
Quincy Smith, president for CBS’ interactive unit, found two things wrong with their offering: the HD player required a special download, and it wasn�t compatible with all computers and browsers.
Other networks haven’t given up. ABC has deployed an HD player built by Move Networks for Windows and Mac OS X. It is considered very good and works as a browser plug-in.
CBS believes that the viewers just can’t be bothered to download and install HD TV viewers for PCs that don’t work very well and aren’t cross-platform, and that’s created indifference to their offerings. Other companies, like ABC, DivX Stage 6, Vimeo, VeohTV, Vuze and Jaman are betting on superior technology to attract viewers.
