CW: How to Configure and Deploy iPhone in Business, Part II
Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 at 4:00 PM - by John Martellaro
Computerworld has published Part 2 of its series by Ryan Fass on how to configure and deploy the iPhone 3G for business. Getting iPhones to connect and sync with MS Exhange servers can be tricky, but it can be made to work smoothly, according to the author.
In Part 1 of the series, Mr. Faas showed how to use the Mac OS X iPhone Configuration Utility to provision multiple iPhones in the enterprise. That tools allows the IT administrator to define the configuration, accounts, user permissions, and settings for an iPhone.
Part 2 of the series shows how to get an iPhone properly set up with ActiveSync and its push notification services that are already in place for Windows Mobile, Palm and Symbian phones.
The author pointed out the peculiarities of Apples AnticSync implementation and how to deal with it. In addition, "It is also important to ensure that your environment is running either Exchange 2003 SP2 or Exchange 2007 SP1 or newer. Apple has specifically listed these as requirements, and the iPhone will not function properly, if at all, with earlier versions," Mr. Fass noted.
The article is extremely technical, but it is also just the kind of valuable resource iPhone administrators will need to reference for a successful, pain-free rollout because the author has walked the walk himself.
The extensive, five part article concludes with a long and handy list of references.
