Chicago Sun-Times Review: iTunes-Ready ROKR "a Hit", "Solid Performer"

In one of the first hands-on reviews since its release Wednesday, Chicago Sun-Times reporter Howard Wolinsky reported Friday the new iTunes-enabled Motorola ROKR phone "looks like a hit" that's "a solid performer."

Mr. Wolinsky said the phone "has an iPod feeling with the iTunes architecture," but shouldn't be mistaken for an iPod. "Each has its own advantages and disadvantages," he wrote.

He also said the sound quality of music over headsets was "great" as all as over the built-in sound system.

Mr. Wolinsky criticized the joint agreement by Motorola and Apple to cap the maximum number of songs available for listening on the ROKR at 100, saying "Apple is no doubt protecting its iPod franchise," but reminded readers "ou can fill extra memory cards with play lists, and swap out cards as needed."

"ROKR was a breeze to set up," commenting he played music on the ROKR "for hours without a major battery drain." He said the tiny metal joystick, used to navigate the ROKR, might be "difficult to use" for those use to a click wheel, found on the iPod.

"Most people will opt for separate MP3 players and cell phones, especially if they don't want to go to the expense of dropping an existing phone contract to switch to Cingular," he concluded. "Still, for others the ROKR could be a rockin' all-in-one MP3 player and phone."
