Consumer Reports: ‘iPod Hi-Fi is Disappointing’

Consumer Reports has weighed in on the new iPod Hi-Fi stereo speakers, labeling it "disappointing," with "so-so audio quality" and more weight than its competitors. "Though it sounds decent enough, the Hi-Fi didn’t match the audio quality of the best-sounding (and lower-priced) iPod boomboxes from our past tests," the magazine said on its Web site. "And it offers few unique features and capabilities--again unusual from a company known for innovation."

On the plus side, the publication appreciated the unit’s ability to go into a power-saving mode if left idle, along with the status light that turns amber when the batteries are low. The remote control also scored high marks.

On the downside, they felt that the Bose SoundDock and Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 both sound better. On top of that, they weigh a lot less: the iPod Hi-Fi is 15 pounds, while the competition is 5.5 and 8.7 pounds, respectively. Consumer Reports liked the Altec Lansing offering the best of the three, citing the fact that it offers more features than the iPod Hi-Fi and a design that "is arguably as sympatico with the iPod look as that of the Hi-Fi."
