DRM Impacts iPod Battery Life
Thursday, March 16th, 2006 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
A recent study shows that playing digital rights management (DRM) protected music files on an MP3 player reduces battery life by up to 25 percent. In the case of the iPod and Apples Fairplay copy protection, battery life fares much better, with only an eight percent drop in battery run time.
According to a study by CNET, most other portable digital music players performed far worse. Creative Zens Vision:M lost a full 25 percent of its run time when playing copy-protected WMA music files. iRivers U10 lost 16 percent of its battery life, but based on its advertised 32 hour run time, youll still be able to make it through a few albums.
Several other factors can impact battery life as well, including the headphones or earbuds you use, whether or not you use the displays backlighting, equalizer settings, and using the iPods Sound Check feature.
If you are looking to squeeze the most out of your iPod, the Apple Web site lists several tips for maximizing your its battery life.
