DVD Jon Activates iPhones Sans Contract

Apple’s iPhone is essentially a futuristic-looking brick until activated, and that process requires users agree to a two-year contract with mobile carrier AT&T... until now, that is. Jon Lech Johansen, also known as "DVD Jon," has figured out how to bypass the AT&T activation process and turn an iPhone into a Wi-Fi Web browsing video iPod for everyone that’s jonesing for an iPhone fix.

The hack isn’t authorized by Apple or AT&T, and it does not enable the iPhone for use as a cell phone. It also does not unlock the iPhone for use on other cell carrier networks.

Considering that an 80GB video capable iPod costs US$349, hacking a $499 4GB or $599 8GB iPhone for use as a Wi-Fi enabled iPod seems like a fairly expensive venture. For some people, however, that can’t use, or don’t want to use the AT&T service plans, this is an alternative that offers at least some of the iPhone’s features.

DVD Jon is best known for his efforts to reverse engineer encryption formats, and most notably for developing an application that decodes the copy protection format used on commercial DVD movie discs. He has also reverse engineered the FairPlay copy protection used by Apple to protect music purchased from the iTunes Store.
