Download-to-Burn DVD Standard Approved

A new standard for downloading movies and then burning them to DVD, called CSS Managed Recording, reached final approval during the DVD Forum in Tokyo last week. PCWorld reports that the standard will allow movies burned to DVD and watched on most standard DVD players while maintianing copy protection that prohibits unauthorized duplication.
CSS Managed Recording will require different recordable DVD discs than those purchased today to account for copy protection once a movie is transfered from a user's computer to disc. Consumers hoping to buy movies from the iTunes Store and other services, however, will be disappointed. CSS Managed Recording will initially be restricted to professional use only, potentially appearing in retail store kiosks where consumers can pick the movies they want to purchase and burn to disc.
Should the service prove successful, it could eventually find its way into home-based services, like Apple's iTunes Store. If so, one of the complaints about online movie purchases would be removed.
