EMI Denies Beatles Download Rumor
Sunday, March 11th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
The music download site Wippit claims it is going to start offering The Beatles music library to customers, but EMI - the label that distributes The Beatles albums - is stating that's not true. BBC News reports that EMI has asked Wippit representatives to remove the statement from the company Web site.
Wippit released the information as a press release on the company Web site with a March 14 date, but the actual release is just a blank page. So far, the press release headline is still available.
Wippit says it has The Beatles library. |

The Beatles is one of the last big-name bands that is not offering its library for digital music download. After Apple Corps, the management company for the Fab Four, settled its long-standing dispute with Apple Computer over the use of the "Apple" name, however, the group's recordings took one step closer to going online.
Apple Corps manager Neil Aspinall revealed during negotiations with the iPod maker that The Beatles music library is being remastered in preparation for release through online music services. He indicated that the tracks will be available through several sources, and industry experts are speculating that Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store will be one of those outlets.
The iTunes Store is a likely first choice for a Beatles release since it is the largest and most popular digital music download service. A release through Wippit is possible, but probably not as a first or exclusive deal.
Instead, Wippit is more likely to gain access to the music library when Apple Corps and EMI roll out the tracks to several services at the same time. What seems more probable is that Wippit's press release is simply a publicity stunt.
