EU Consumer Protection Commissioner: iTunes Policy Should Change
Sunday, March 11th, 2007 at 3:00 PM - by Jeff Gamet
Meglena Kuneva, Consumer Protection Commissioner for the European Union, isn't pleased that songs purchased from Apple's iTunes Store are designed to be compatible only with the iPod. silicon.com reports that she feels the music downloads should be compatible with all music players.
"Do you think it's fine that a CD plays in all CD players but that an iTunes song only plays in an iPod? I don't," she said. "Something has to change."
An EU spokesperson pointed out that Ms. Kuneva's comment was her personal opinion. "I don't think she was stating it as a definitive policy position. At this stage it is her gut instinct," the spokesperson stated.
Ms. Kuneva is currently conducting a review of the eight laws governing cross-border consumer rights. Her review could lead to proposed revisions to EU consumer-related laws.
Should Ms. Kuneva's opinion carry over into EU policy, that could become a headache for Apple. The Mac and iPod maker is currently dealing with a mandate from Norway to open the iTunes Store to competing music players by October 1. Other countries in the region are watching and will likely follow Norway's lead.
Apple has not commented on Ms. Kuneva's remarks, or on its plans for dealing with Norway.
