Europe iPhone Interest Growing

Apple’s iPhone may still be months away from release in Europe, but that’s not stopping interest in the combination iPod and cell phone from growing. A recent survey of 2,000 Europeans even showed that about half would consider switching to an iPhone for their next mobile phone, according to the New York Times.

Another survey revealed that about 25 percent of the respondents in Europe would be willing to switch service providers to get an iPhone.

The consumer interest has caught the eye of the mobile phone industry, and several carriers have been fighting for the chance to strike a deal with Apple. So far, T-Mobile is seen as one of the top contenders for a European deal, but 3 and Vodafone appear to be in the running, too. All offer 3G wireless data networking - a feature that many expect the iPhone will offer outside of the United States.

Carolina Milanesi, a London-based mobile phone analyst for Gartner, took a look at T-Mobile and 3. "Both these operators are the most forward-thinking in how 3G telephones should be brought to consumers," he said Carolina Milanesi. "They have the appropriate and futuristic business models necessary for the iPhone already in place."

The iPhone is expected to ship in the United States at the end of June. It will be carried exclusively by AT&T.
